So a designer at Nike is tasked with creating a special edition trainer for Independence Day. They decide on America's first flag created during the American Revolution. Retro, historical with the modern. Just shows what modern day designers are up against in the modern day of politics and loudhailer digital platforms to preach on as people understandably link the flag the times of that flag and the oppression it came with for black people. It was a bad mistake.
But what will happen to those trainers? There are millions of people in the world desperate for footwear, they are unlikely to be offended by the flag if they have shoes to wear. The flag could be crudely painted over. Let's hope Nike salvage some reputation by donating the returns to those in need.
Mr Haigh said: "I think this one has been nipped in the bud so although it was a poor decision by them to release [the trainers] in the first place, I doubt that because they acted so quickly and removed it from the shelves there will be much of an impact."
